CLEANING AND SANITIZING
We've all heard stories of sprouts being recalled for salmonella poisoning. Salmonella is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in those with weakened immune systems. It can cause diarrhea, fever and vomiting.
Salmonella is a real threat and should not be taken lightly. However, when growing your own home grown sprouts and micro greens, you minimize that threat to a minimum.
When growing sprouts, you must rinse your sprouts 2 or 3 times a day and do not let them stand in an enclosed jar without proper drainage and adequate air circulation.
Micro greens on the other hand, have all the air they need and proper drainage.
What's important to remember is to sanitize your re-usable containers between each planting. It couldn't get any easier than incorporating hydrogen peroxide into your micro green lifestyle. Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is just about as excellent as you can get for sanitizing and has been known to aid in sprouting seeds. I've never used it for seed sprouting, but for all my sanitation needs especially when it comes to my micro greens, hydrogen peroxide is my #1 choice.
I used to be a bleach freak. I sprayed bleach on everything. Bleach is used in labs as a major sanitizer and I figured I was in good company spraying it all around my house. Now I do have to admit, even tho bleach does the job well in cleaning and sanitizing, the fumes can be irritating. And if you get it on your hands, your hands smell like bleach for hours and can give headaches. If you search the internet looking for the dangers of bleach, you will come across a host of web sites giving you the low down.
Here is where I welcome hydrogen peroxide. I call this my lifesaver. After washing my trays, I spray hydrogen peroxide on my reusable trays and let it dry. I don't even have to rinse. Since I now use terracotta for all my growing needs and I know I'm going to be soaking the tray before a new planting anyway, why rinse. Also, if you can use hydrogen peroxide to aid in sprouting...uh...I think I've got a winner on my hands. Did you know that H2O2 is a considered a 'green' product?
I happened to come across this ebook that list 101 uses for hydrogen peroxide. 101? Get real. 101? So, I bought it and downloaded it. There are actually 101 uses listed. It's true, I have not used all 101 ways, but it is truly amazing what you can do with it.
I enjoy owning my own ebooks instead of just searching the internet because, like some of you, I get kicked off the internet just when I need to get at some information or recipe and can't get back onto the net. With my own ebook, I can print any pages I want and don't have to worry if my ISP is up and running or not. Do yourself a favor and check out this ebook. Leave the bleach to the labs, and use hydrogen peroxide at home.
